Scholarship for PhD Program at SNU Business School

Scholarship for Research Assistants Doctoral students can support faculty’s research activities as research assistants. Research assistants will be free of tuition and offered research grants specified by the Dean of the College of Business Administration on a month basis for four years after their enrollment in the Ph.D. Program (excluding periods of temporary absence from school). In the case that research assistants are given outside grants, if the outside grant is smaller than the scholarship (the total of monthly research grants and tuition fees), the difference will be offered by CBA as scholarship. If the outside grant is as much as or more than the on-campus scholarship, the on-campus scholarship will not be offered. Outside grants (including lecture scholarship) include all monetary supports, given from external sources, such as wages and lecture fees. However, the scholarship for research assistants from Korea National Open University is excluded from the calculation of outside grants.

1. Research assistants will work on the job for a maximum of 15 hours on a weekly basis.

The arral students fail to submit progress reports within the set period or to meet the requirements for working papers; or if faculty members of each doctoral area ask scholarshiangement of research assistants to each faculty member shall be recommended by doctoral areas, and determined by the Ph.D. Program Committee.
3. If doctorp to be suspended or reduced, such requests can be accepted.
4. Research centers for each doctoral area shall not offer scholarships, living supports or research grants.
5. Average doctoral credits shall be a minimum of 3.6.
6. The grade point average for doctoral students shall be a minimum of 3.6.

Curriculum Overview
Full-Time Residency
After the admission to the Ph.D. Program doctoral students shall maintain two years of full-time residency (excluding the periods for temporary absence from school).

Publications in Academic Journals
Doctoral students shall publish a minimum of one paper in overseas referred academic journals (in principle, in the US and Europe) or a minimum of two academic articles in domestic referred academic journals until ten days before the final date of dissertation evaluation. If there are co-authors for published papers, detailed information including the recognition ratios of such papers can be found in the attachment (Operational Guidelines for Ph.D. Program Committee and Detailed Enforcement Rules).

Presentation in Academic Seminars
Doctoral students shall present a minimum of one paper at domestic or overseas academic seminars ten days earlier than the final day of dissertation evaluation. They are recommended to co-author their papers with SNU faculty.

Working Paper
Doctoral students shall finish at least one working paper until the end of the 6th semester, submit it to Ph.D. Program Directors, and present it at workshops.

Dissertation Proposal
Doctoral students shall present their dissertation proposals at open workshops before the procedures for doctoral dissertation evaluation determined by Seoul National University. Dissertation workshops can be held in parallel with workshops for specialized fields. For the procedures for proposals, refer to the attachment (Operational Guidelines for Ph.D. Program Committee and Detailed Enforcement Rules).

Doctoral Progress Report and Course Application Doctoral students shall submit progress reports, written based on the designated template, to Ph.D. Program Directors in February every year. In terms of course application, they shall gain approvals from Ph.D. Committee members and directors for their specialized fields.

Qualifying Examination and Time Limit for Graduation Doctoral students shall pass the qualifying examination within four years after their enrollment (including the periods of temporary absence from school), and a maximum of two applications for the qualifying examination are allowed. In addition, they shall pass the final evaluation of dissertation within seven years after their enrollment (including the periods of temporary absence from school).

Introduction to Operations Management and Credit Requirements
1) Introduction to Organizational Behavior and Human Resources
The faculty of Organizational Behavior and Human Resources is composed of seven professors, who are well recognized at home and abroad. They provide students with in-depth lectures on organizational behavior, organization theories, human resources management and industrial relations. As they publish a majority of papers in world-famous academic journals and actively work as reviewers, students can have a wide range of opportunities to learn not only orthodox theories on this discipline but also latest ones.
This Master’s Program is divided into Organizational Behavior, Organization Theory, Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations. Students are required to take each relevant course as the core curriculum for the purpose of in-depth research for dissertation preparation. They are required to take ‘Seminar in Organizational Behavior and Human Resources’ in the last semester to receive advice on their dissertation preparation.

2) Credit Requirements for Master’s Degree
Students need to acquire minimum 39 credits (including 15 credits from the compulsory core curriculum) with 3.0 or higher on average.

(*The course name of Human Resource Management is changed into Study in Human Resource Management from 2008. *Students are required to take Seminar in Organizational Behavior and Human Resources in the last semester in order to prepare their dissertations.)

This course focuses on the management and improvement of supply chain processes. Students will begin with the following supply chain basics: what are the important supply chain metrics; what are the primary cost tradeoffs; and what are the key features of the transportation industry? Students will next consider supply chain incentive conflicts and possible solutions to those conflicts. Several recent and influential innovations will then be discussed: Accurate Response, Continuous Product Replenishment, cross docking, Efficient Consumer Response, Postponement, Quick Response, Rapid Delivery, and Vendor Managed Inventories. Students will investigate supplier management and the outsourcing decision, and also touch upon International supply chains. The course will conclude with a broad discussion of the impact of electronic commerce on supply chains.

This course is designed to provide students with the techniques needed to design and analyze service delivery processes, particularly those associated with information-intensive services. The course will address the following topics: service operations in e-commerce, service blueprinting for process improvement, service supply chain and logistics services, service quality/experience, revenue management, globalization of professional services, waiting line analysis, call center operations, and data envelopment analysis. A recurring theme will be the use of technology in providing a faster and more reliable service delivery.
