Admission Requirements:
To qualify for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidates must hold the following qualifications: Applicants are required to have a Masters Degree with CGPA of at least 3.300 or its equivalent in the relevant field; or,
Applicants have a Masters Degree with CGPA below 3.300 or equivalent in the relevant field but have experience in research work; or,
Applicants have obtained whatever other qualification that is approved by the UPM Senate.
Applicants must have proficiency in the language according to the requirement of the University.
Language Proficiency Requirements:
(English Language)
A Malaysian candidate must have obtained at least a credit in English at Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia level or have passed English courses conducted at the Diploma or Bachelor’s level.
All international candidates from countries where English is not a medium of instruction must have obtained a minimum score of 550 for TOEFL or 6 for IELTS. This requirement is not applicable to candidate applying for admission into the Malay Language Studies.
Provisional admission may be granted to an applicant who has obtained a score of 500 - 549 for TOEFL or Band 5 - 5.5 for IELTS or its equivalent, who upon registration, is required to enrol and pass the Tertiary English Programme conducted by the University. An applicant with a TOEFL score lower than 500 or IELTS lower than Band 5 shall not be considered for admission. An applicant with a degree from any Malaysian public university who has fulfilled the English requirement for that degree shall be exempted from such a requirement.
(Malay Language)
All international students (except students from Indonesia and Brunei) must obtain a grade ‘M’ for the Malay Language course (BBM 1401 or its equivalent) to be eligible for conferral of a degree.

Business Research Methods
This course focuses on the analysis of business problems and the use of scientific research as a problem-solving tool. This encompasses the understanding and application of appropriate research designs, statistical analysis techniques, the use of computer for data analyses, report writing and presentation.
Business Statistics
Topics covered are introduction to statistics, fundamentals of probability, random variable and probability distributions, sampling distributions, point and interval estimates, hypothesis testing- single and two populations, ANOVA, simple regression, chi square applications, non-parametric statistics and multi-variate data analysis- multiple regression, factor analysis, structured Equation Modelling.

The main objective of the Doctor of Philosophy or in short PhD programme is to prepare candidates for careers in academic or in disciplines requiring strong research background. The PhD programme is designed to enhance candidates’ competence in research in a specific area of management and business administration towards fostering the development of new knowledge.
Exposure in the areas of management will be in-depth, whereby graduates will be focusing on a specialised area and will work to further develop their conceptual and intellectual knowledge and methodological tools necessary to design and conduct independent research. Trimesters Offering the Programme:
GSM has implemented the trimester system. Every academic year is divided into First, Second and Third trimester. Each trimester consists of 14 weeks of studies and 1 week of examination.
First and Second Trimester
Classes are held during the evening on weekdays (6.30 p.m – 9.30 p.m) and/or on Saturdays (9.00 a.m – 12.00 noon / 2.30 p.m – 5.30 p.m).
The average period of study is 6 trimesters (2 years) with a maximum of 9 trimesters (3 years).

In the information age, demand for professionals with expertise in every field of research is increasing. The Master of Science programme is designed for individuals who aim to pursue research of the highest standard, with immediate relevance to business and management. While graduates in this programme are equipped to choose their career as executives or managers in various fields in the public or private sector, the programme is specifically designed for those who are interested to become researchers, academics and consultants in a variety of business and management disciplines.
Candidates will be exposed to the theory and critical issues within each area of specialisation, while exploring how their speciality relates to other functional areas. Candidates will also gain the expertise of carrying out a thesis research in a specified area. The Master’s thesis demonstrates the individual’s aptitude for advanced research and professional accomplishment. It entails the formulation of a research objective, application of the appropriate technical tools, and successful pursuit of a research project to its logical conclusion. Each student will be called to defend, first the proposal and finally, the completed thesis.
