COMM 399 Logistics and Operations Management
Logistics and Operations Management (LOM) issues are important in all organizations that deliver services or goods. These issues usually have a profound impact on the bottom line and success of each organization. This course will show that these issues need to be given adequate attention in the organization, and if they are down played or overlooked, there is a high risk for detrimental effects on profitability, service levels, customer retention and delivery of quality. Due to the broad nature of the subject it is important to educate professionals with a proper understanding of these issues. The primary objective of this course is to provide the students with an introduction to LOM.
During the course students will learn about the strategic relevance of LOM, frequently used terms, process design and analysis, product development impact on operations, forecasting and capacity analysis, inventory management and production planning, supply chain management including purchasing and logistics as well as quality philosophies. We will primarily review issues that an operations executive should consider in his/her field of responsibility. In order to enhance the capabilities of an organization, so that the firm can achieve a sustaining competitive advantage vis-à-vis its global competitors, all executives and professionals need to have an understanding of LOM.
This course is relevant for students who want to pursue a career in LOM and also for students who wish to understand some of the important workings inside a company in the manufacturing, service or retail sectors. For students who will not be involved in managing operations, there is still a need to discuss issues with operations and technical experts, understand their great financial impact and be able to call on the people with the appropriate skill sets to resolve issues. For anybody in the financial/accounting side of an organization, the LOM part is tightly knitted with the capabilities to perform an outstanding job. Vice a versa, for an LOM executive it is important to have a deep understanding of the financials/accounting side of an organization. Any general manager candidate needs to understand LOM.
