Elective courses are designed to deliver state of the art thinking in a focused set of areas. Students take a minimum of nine elective courses, but may choose to take up to 11. Over the 13-week period (which also includes time for evaluations) you will generally be participating in both morning and afternoon courses.

PhD Program in Business Administration
The PhD Program in Business Administration is an intensive research-based program with a teacher training component. The program is designed to develop an individual's analytic, research and teaching ability and prepare PhD candidates for a career in university teaching and research. Microeconomics for Managers
This is an introduction to the economic way of thinking. The content covers basic foundations of supply and demand, price determination, and the economics of industry structure. Cases, exercises and lectures emphasize the use of microeconomic principles for understanding business situations and making effective management decisions.

Business Foundations of Cross-Enterprise Leadership
Executive MBA Programs are general business management programs for managers and executives who want to earn their MBA degree without interrupting their careers.
Since 1991, the Executive MBA program at the Richard Ivey School of Business has combined practical face-to-face learning and a full-time faculty with the most in-depth Case Study curriculum in the country.
Management Behaviour
The management behaviour course is designed to develop general managers who can understand and deal effectively with human issues in organizations. Management Behaviour I focuses on managing teams and people. Management Behaviour II, which is taught in the second year of the HBA program, emphasizes the design of organizations and the management of organizational change.
Strategic Analysis & Action
This course is about how an enterprise achieves and sustains a high level of success, and the role of the general manager in this process. Instead of focusing on a particular functional area, this course provides you with a process for problem-solving and decision-making that requires you to build on, integrate and apply the knowledge gained from those disciplines in order to develop an overall general management perspective.
Operations
Providing the service or delivering the goods is the key transaction that every organization must execute flawlessly. The Operations course helps you develop the tools needed to do so by teaching you the necessary fundamentals, by focusing on the management point-of-view and by removing the awkwardness people feel when dealing with operations and its associated technologies. The cases in this course discuss a wide range of companies and deal with topics like capability enhancement; timing and coordination; quality and learning; and technology and strategy.
Executive Client Field Project – Business 564
This is a group project, conducted in self-selected teams for the duration of the program. A senior executive client must be obtained in either a profit-oriented or non-profit organization of appropriate size and complexity. There are deliverables at the end of each term and the international field trip to China is part of this project.
Your first year in the Ivey HBA Program is typically your third year of university. You work with the same classmates, in the same classroom with a dedicated faculty team. The nine member faculty team works closely to develop an integrated and flexible timetable that weaves the content together into a complete program experience. You cover the essentials of what every good manager needs to know and to be able to do. Career Management is also built into the curriculum to help you define your career goals and develop a job search strategy to get you there.
Competing with Analytics – Business 551
This course will develop your ability to the use of analytical methods to structure complex decisions, analyze and compare alternatives, and arrive at a plan of action. Topics such as coping with the uncertain future, the analysis of complex data, and solving simultaneous decision problems will be covered in the context of a variety of real management problems including bidding, procurement, supply chain, and pricing. The focus of the course is on how the appropriate use of analytics can create a competitive advantage for the firm.
Stakeholder Communication – Business 552
This course will develop your ability to communicate with the wide variety of stakeholders important to your businesses. We will improve your presentation skills, and explore how better to manage written information. We will strengthen your leadership capabilities by building your interpersonal communication skills, including your ability to handle the difficult conversations that occur when talking with angry stakeholders. And we will hone your understanding of the corporate communication process to make you more aware of the centrality of communication to a corporation’s success.

Management Communications
If you want to rise to the top of your organization, effective communication skills are required at every level and will often set you apart from your peers. Management Communications will help you gain the skills necessary to influence people with your ideas face-to-face and on paper. By focusing extensively on the purpose and the audience for what you write and say, you will learn to express yourself coherently and succinctly. Operations
The Doctoral Program in Operations Management (OM) at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario is designed to prepare students for a career in research and teaching in leading schools of business administration. It includes an understanding of the design and implementation of model-based systems for planning, controlling, and improving operations and the use of analytical aids for managerial decision-making in such areas as new technology, management of scarce resources, productivity, quality assurance, and workforce management. Operations concepts are equally applicable to the service sector.

Winning Through Marketing Management – Business 553
Winning in markets is at the core of business success. Winning means attracting, growing and retaining customers, beating competition, and making money. This is done in a context of dynamic changes related to economic and other dimensions of the situation. This course puts you in the marketing manager’s chair. It exposes you to the decisions such as positioning, and creating customer value. It exposes you to the concepts and tools used to make these decisions such as market segmentation, competitive analysis, and the lifetime value of a customer.
Leading – Business 550
This course will help you develop a fuller assessment of your own personal leadership as well as a plan for how you can leverage your strengths and develop your weaknesses to more effectively lead people in groups and teams. The course covers many aspects of personal leadership, including career-path development, the role of mentors, effective coaching and direction, developing commitment in others, and the best use of teams in business settings. Several methods will be used to address these topic areas, including personality / style assessment tools, business cases, videos, and experiential workshops.
Degree Requirements
The PhD degree requirements fall into two categories: Program Requirements and Area of Concentration Requirements. All students complete courses required by the program and thereby develop skills that will enhance their ability to generate leading-edge research and also become an effective teacher.
Area of Concentration Requirements depend upon the student's chosen field of study. The student selects a major from the 8 Areas of Concentration and completes the courses that the Area requires. Course loads range from nine to twelve half course equivalents (HECs).
