International Entrepreneurship
Managing Technology and Intellectual Property
Rapid advances in globalization and technology have changed the context for both entrepreneurial and technology-related issues at national and international levels. The PhD Program offers opportunities for specialization in interdisciplinary topics in both International Entrepreneurship and Managing Technology and Intellectual Property.
The International Entrepreneurship specialization focuses on theory and practice associated with the rapidly expanding field of entrepreneurship set within a global context. Managing Technology and Intellectual Property is an emerging field that combines the issues of intellectual property rights and technology policy at the organizational, national and international levels. Relevant sub-topics range from national innovation systems to managing alliances for innovation to strategies for enhancing returns from intellectual property.
Students may concentrate on both theoretical and empirical topics and use quantitative or qualitative methodologies in their research and specialization stages. The Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies provides rich access to entrepreneurial firms while the Power Corporation Centre for International Studies can facilitate internationally-oriented studies.
Current Area Research Topics
Managing technology in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
Internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises: instant versus gradual internationalization
Valorization strategies for intellectual property
Comparing national innovation systems for biotechnology
Collaboration and competition between small and large enterprises
Procurement, deployment and commercialization of intellectual property in SMEs
Knowledge-based and technology-driven theories of entrepreneurship in high technology sectors
Specialization Requirements
As these research areas are interdisciplinary in nature, a doctoral candidate should be able to combine relevant theoretical and methodological courses from both the supporting and constituent fields (e.g., entrepreneurship and international business for international entrepreneurship) and work with appropriate faculty members in each respective area.
