Program Description at University of Western Ontario

The PhD program at Ivey is a full-time program. Students register full-time for four years and are expected to be on campus during this period. Each student is provided a four year funding package to assist them financially.

PhD students identify their research interests and select a discipline area when they apply to the program. Upon admission they are aligned to a specific discipline and a faculty mentor.

The overall program structure provides the participant with both the conceptual and analytical tools as well as background knowledge to conduct leading edge research in an area of their choice. Thus the next generation of scholars and researcher are produced, who have the skills and expertise to function effectively in a knowledge based world.

The program begins in September each year. In addition to completing required core courses, some elective courses may be taken during the first year. The first year summer term is dedicated to working full-time as a research assistant for a faculty member, usually in the student’s discipline area.

During the second year, students continue with course work and complete two courses required for all students: ” Cross Discipline Research” and “Research into Practice: Foundations of Management Teaching” . In the second year, students typically focus on an area of interest and also begin presenting their research at national and international conferences. In addition, at this time they begin preparing for their comprehensive examination and normally complete it between their 18th to 24th month in the program. By the end of the third year, all program and area of discipline requirements should be completed.

Once the comprehensive examination is successfully completed, students develop and defend their thesis proposal after which they obtain ethics approval of their research and commence with their thesis work. From their second to fourth year, students also provide research support to faculty members on a part-time basis.

By the end of the third year, all program and area group requirements should be completed. See Degree Requirements and visit each Discipline for details. In their fourth year, while working on their thesis research, students generally begin their job search and usually are employed when they defend their dissertation.
