PhD Degree Requirements at University of Western Ontario

Degree Requirements

The PhD degree requirements fall into two categories: Program Requirements and Area of Concentration Requirements. All students complete courses required by the program and thereby develop skills that will enhance their ability to generate leading-edge research and also become an effective teacher.

Area of Concentration Requirements depend upon the student’s chosen field of study. The student selects a major from the 8 Areas of Concentration and completes the courses that the Area requires. Course loads range from nine to twelve half course equivalents (HECs).

Courses required by the student’s Area of Concentration are listed under each Area. Students take 2-4 HCEs.
Elective courses (3HCEs) may be required as well.

HBA Year 2 at University of Western Ontario

In your final year, you build strength from the foundational business knowledge and skills developed during your first year at Ivey.

The core curriculum in HBA 2 prepares you to hit the ground running when you enter the workforce. There are four core courses in HBA 2.

Electives and Opportunities for Specialization of MBA at University of Western Ontario

Elective courses are designed to deliver state of the art thinking in a focused set of areas. Students take a minimum of nine elective courses, but may choose to take up to 11. Over the 13-week period (which also includes time for evaluations) you will generally be participating in both morning and afternoon courses.

We offer a carefully defined set of elective courses that together, form a competence inventory that supports common career paths of Ivey MBA grads. This gives you the ability to customize your elective suite of courses based on career interests in areas such as Finance, Marketing, Corporate Strategy and Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Health Sector and International Management.

Structure:

The MBA portion of the program is 45 credits. There are no concentrations required, however the option exists for a student to take all 5 elective courses in a concentration (either Finance, Marketing, Global Leadership or Innovation and Technology Management).

Description:

The MD/MBA program recognizes that there is an increasing demand in the healthcare sector for physicians with management skills and expertise. This is a five-year program in which the first year is spent in the Desautels Faculty of Management completing the MBA core as well as building a solid background in healthcare management. Then, the students will begin their medical studies, which will be integrated with additional elective courses in management. This will provide the opportunity to train well-rounded physician-managers who can eventually pursue careers in a wide range of healthcare areas, from the smallest clinic to the largest tertiary health care facility; from research laboratory to university or hospital medical departments, as well as the private sector within pharma/biotechnology firms and the health insurance sector, among others.
