COMM 436 Information Systems Analysis and Design

Understand the process of analysis, design, and implementation of information systems. Learn methods, techniques, and related issues of systems analysis and design. Gain some hands-on experience in systems analysis and design.

Systems analysis and design is the process of determining information technology needs for a particular application or set of applications and defining appropriate solution for these needs. It is a crucial step in adapting IT for use in organizations. Without proper analysis, organizations face the risk of failure in IT projects. COMM 436 is intended to provide the student with knowledge and techniques required for conducting systems analysis. Such knowledge is useful not only to systems analysts but also to users of information systems and to management.

Main topics to be covered are:
The information system development Process: concepts, main phases, activities, products, and roles.
The Feasibility Study: objectives, constraints, the feasibility report.
Cost-benefit analysis of information systems: objectives, difficulties, identification of benefits, cost components, multi-criteria evaluation.
Business requirements analysis.
Modelling the business: Object-Oriented Enterprise Modeling.
Modelling business processes: Event Driven Process Models, IDEF0, SAP Event Controlled Process Chains.
Documenting Existing and Proposed Information Systems: data flow diagrams, entity-relationship diagrams, and document flowcharts.
Documenting process logic: Structured English, Decision Tables, Decision Trees, State-Transition Diagrams
Object-oriented design: the Unified Modeling Language (UML)
Some Issues in the implementation process of information systems: Conversion of information systems, Post implementation evaluation of information systems, Evaluating vendor proposals, and Quality management
