The Major in Music covers the areas of Music Theory, Music History, and Performance with the opportunity for development of individual performance skills. Studies develop musicianship, capabilities in the use of principles and procedures that lead to an intellectual grasp of the art, and the ability to perform.
The major in Visual Arts consists of a minimum of 11 courses. The requirements include the following:
MUS 122 History of Music I
MUS 124 History of Music II
MUS 201 Music Theory I
MUS 301 Music Theory II
MUS 401 Music Theory III
MUS 330 Conducting
MUS 193 Chorale OR MUS 195 Band (6 semesters)
•Three additional courses from among department offerings (not to include MUS 101 Fundamentals of Music or MUS 120 Introduction to the Study of Music). Applied music instruction in Voice or an instrument may be counter toward the Major. Three semesters at 1 credit per semester are required to count as 1 course.
These courses offer a survey of Western Art from Ancient to Modern times. This is taught in a historical framework, but also gives the students the opportunity to examine a select number of works in closer detail. This strategy exposes students to the elements of visual language and helps them to develop critical skills, which can be used to develop further understanding of the visual arts
