This course covers the economic foundations of managerial decision-making. Topics include supply and demand interactions, the theory of demand, decision-making under uncertainty, production and cost, price determination under perfect competition and monopoly, strategies for pricing with market power, monopolistic competition, oligopoly, game theory, asymmetric information, agency, and market failure. The course uses a variety of mathematical techniques, particularly graphs, algebra, and calculus.

Managerial Accounting & Control

Managerial Accounting & Control will NOT be accepting applications for 2009.

Management Accounting and Control (MAC) provides a broad but rigorous exposure to the core issues of financial and management accounting theory. In addition, students explore in depth research areas such as financial reporting and disclosure, taxation, total quality management and cross-cultural control systems. The primary focus is on users of financial information and empirical problems of relevance to the practice of accounting and management. As a result, field research methods are often an important part of the dissertation research process.

Students take the full spectrum of PhD foundation and area special field courses. Depending on their academic background and research interests, students may be required to take courses offered by other area groups and faculties on campus.

Business 803 a/b: Fundamental Studies. The first seminar examines the history and foundation of accounting theories, the introduction of behavioural concepts to accounting and the interface between accounting and organizational theory.

Business 813 a/b: Research in Financial Accounting. The second seminar focuses on research in financial accounting.

Business 823 a/b: Research Control. The third deals with managerial economics, cost accounting and management control systems, and examines the interface between management decision-making, human behaviour, organizational theory and accounting information within the firm.

Business 833 a/b: Research Topics. The fourth seminar covers current research topics in the managerial accounting and control area.
