Admission requirements

Interested students must meet the individual admission requirements of and apply to both the Faculty of Law and the Desautels Faculty of Management. Candidates must also demonstrate a strong fluency in both French and English, in preparation for Law classes.

Minimum requirements for admission to the MBA program:
An undergraduate degree from an accredited university, with a grade point average of 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 (”B” average).
GMAT (Graduate Admissions Test) with an average score of 650.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) for students earning an undergraduate degree outside Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. TOEFL is not waived for students of four-year university programs whose language of instruction is English, if the university is located in a non-English speaking Country. A minimum score of 600 on the paper-based test or 250 on the computer-based test is required.
A minimum of one year of full-time work experience following graduation with an undergraduate degree is preferred.

Students accepted to the Joint Program either do so beginning their first year in the MBA program with a guarantee of admission to Law the following year (upon successful completion of all first year courses), or starting in Law with the option to begin taking MBA courses during the second year, should they pass all courses.

Program Structure

Due to its intensive and challenging nature, this program is restricted to the most dedicated full-time students. Candidates who have been granted exemptions in either Faculty will be required to take substitute courses.

Students pursue their coursework across 4-5 years of classroom lecture, discussions, and practical sessions, exploring all aspects of advanced management and legal theory. Students enrolled in the McGill MBA program’s first year are eligible to apply for the Joint MBA/Law Program, those enrolled in the Faculty of Law may apply for the Joint Program during their second year.

Joint Program in Management & Law (MBA/Law)

A unique program capitalizing on McGill’s long and successful tradition of simultaneously integrating common and civil law training with advanced management education, this challenging program prepares students for an active and diverse career. Students master successively greater challenges in legal and administrative theory and practice. They prepare for leadership positions in private and public enterprise, government service, large corporations, and as management consultancies. Graduates leave the four year-long program with MBA and BCL, LLB degrees.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have received or be within one year of receiving an undergraduate degree at a recognized college or university. An undergraduate degree consists of a three-year program leading to a bachelor’s degree following a diploma of collegial studies in Québec (or equivalent), or a four-year degree leading to a bachelor’s degree following the completion of high school. Successful candidates must hold this bachelor’s degree when they register. Students must also submit an autobiographical letter describing their interest in the program and career aspirations, as well as three letters of reference attesting to their scholastic aptitude and program potential.
Additional course requirements

Specific course requirements are listed below. Candidates must successfully complete the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). that must be written no later than August one year prior to application.

One full year (two semesters) university-level courses, with laboratory work, in each of:
General biology
General chemistry
Organic chemistry (one semester required only)
Physics
University-level courses in: Cell biology and Molecular biology

Applications for the MD-MBA program must be submitted no later than November 15.

Following the evaluation of the complete application package, selected candidates are invited to interviews, after which final admissions decisions are made.

Structure:

The MBA portion of the program is 45 credits. There are no concentrations required, however the option exists for a student to take all 5 elective courses in a concentration (either Finance, Marketing, Global Leadership or Innovation and Technology Management).

Description:

The MD/MBA program recognizes that there is an increasing demand in the healthcare sector for physicians with management skills and expertise. This is a five-year program in which the first year is spent in the Desautels Faculty of Management completing the MBA core as well as building a solid background in healthcare management. Then, the students will begin their medical studies, which will be integrated with additional elective courses in management. This will provide the opportunity to train well-rounded physician-managers who can eventually pursue careers in a wide range of healthcare areas, from the smallest clinic to the largest tertiary health care facility; from research laboratory to university or hospital medical departments, as well as the private sector within pharma/biotechnology firms and the health insurance sector, among others.

Post MBA Certificate

KEEP YOURSELF UPDATED

The McGill Post MBA Certificate program is designed to meet the needs of MBA graduates who wish either to update their skills or to complement their expertise by broadening the base of their education.
Program Structure

The Certificate is awarded upon completion of at least 5 MBA courses (15 or more credits).

Admission to the Certificate is limited to individuals who already hold an MBA or MSc (Administration) degree deemed equivalent to a North American MBA from a recognized university.

Candidates must also meet the following requirements:
A minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 or equivalent.
Two or more years of full-time relevant work experience.
A minimum TOEFL score of 600 (250CAT) for candidates whose mother tongue is not English.

Tuition and Scholarships

ONCE ACCEPTED

Students who accept our Offer of Admission to the McGill MBA Japan Program must forward a Registration Deposit of 200,000 Yen (see Payment Schedule). This fee is refundable if the student subsequently decides to decline the Offer of Admission by the date specified in the Letter of Admission.

Note that beginning in June 2008, McGill MBA Japan tuition payments will be subject to Japanese Consumption Tax, presently 5%.
Refund Policy

The first payment of tuition fees is refundable in full provided the Program Director receives written notification stating the intent to withdraw three weeks prior to the first day of classes. Full refund of tuition will not be granted once classes have commenced. Half of the second payment of tuition fees will be refunded provided the Program Director receives written notification no later than three weeks into the second session of the first year.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND OTHER ASSISTANCE

Students in the McGill MBA Japan program are expected to derive funding for their studies from their personal financial resources, from their employer, or through a governmental funding agency.

Scholarships are only offered to candidates who meet all our published requirements. Scholarship decisions are made after the candidate has been admitted to the program.

A number of Scholarships are available to qualified MBA Japan candidates.
JMEC Alumni Scholarship

The JMEC Alumni Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, potential contribution to the learning of the other MBA Japan students, and financial need.
JET Alumni Scholarship

McGill MBA Japan also offers a Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) alumni scholarship. To be eligible for a JET Scholarship, candidates need to provide confirmation of their JET participation.
Sophia University Graduate Scholarship

A Sophia University Graduate Scholarship is also available. Candidates for this scholarship need to be graduates of Sophia University.
McGill Entrance Scholarship

There is also a McGill Entrance Scholarship, for which all candidates may apply.

Selection for all awards is based on academic merit, potential contribution to the program, and financial need. To apply for any of these Scholarships, students should include a letter with their applications identifying the Scholarship for which they wish to be considered and elaborating on their academic qualifications, potential contribution to the program and financial need.

Other Assistance

Other loan and grant programs may be available. Students may be eligible for financial assistance from the government of their home country, state, province or prefecture, or city. In particular, present or former members of the United States Armed Forces may be eligible for extensive financial support. Interested candidates should contact their government educational funding institution for information.

The McGill MBA Japan is designed for high-achieving, ambitious students interested in making a real impact with their careers. McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management seeks applicants with strong managerial potential.

Admissions are based on many factors. Your undergraduate degree (minimum GPA 3.0) and any further academic qualifications are important indicators of intellectual ability and likelihood of success in our program.

Candidates take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) in addition to the TOEFL, if applicable.

A waiver of the GMAT can be considered for applicants who demonstrate significant academic achievement and or substantial quantitative ability. Waivers are not automatic and will only be considered upon request from the candidate after his or her application has been received.

Applicants must have a minimum of two years of relevant full-time work experience after their undergraduate degree. The admissions committee is also interested in your extracurricular interests and letters of reference. Qualified applicants will be invited to an interview with an alumni or staff member.

Note: Admission to the McGill MBA Japan program is based on a combination of work experience, academic background, standardized tests, and the results of an interview. Candidates with extensive employment experience and/or advanced academic credentials may have certain criteria waived. Please contact our office to discuss your application.

Necessary items:

A checklist for applicants is available in our Application Booklet, which can be downloaded from this site. We can also send this to you by regular post.

Application fee: Applicants are required to apply online and pay the application fee by credit card. This $100 fee is a processing fee and is non-refundable.

Letters of reference: Candidates must submit two letters of reference from individuals who have been directly responsible for evaluating their managerial performance and potential. These letters must be forwarded directly by the referee along with their business card.
Personal statement: Candidates are required to submit a personal statement as part of their application.

Transcripts: Students should submit official transcripts as well as official English language translations from all universities attended, including universities attended for degree programs, as an exchange or visiting student, and for short programs that did not lead to a degree. These must be forwarded directly by the issuing institution. McGill transcripts will be requested internally provided that the student number is indicated on the application form.

Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT):GMAT scores are to be forwarded to the MBA admissions office by Pearson Vue. While there is no minimum GMAT score required, the average GMAT score of the most recent class was 650. Note:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): McGill requires a minimum score of 600 for the paper-based test, 250 for the computer-based test, or 86 for the Internet-based test. Applicants who are not Canadian citizens and whose mother tongue is not English may be asked to demonstrate an English language competency beyond the submission of the TOEFL score. Admissions Interview: Candidates who meet our published requirements will be contacted for an interview with our program staff or McGill alumni.

Pre-admissions Interview: Interested potential candidates can also arrange an interview prior to applying to the program. Please contact our office in Tokyo to arrange this.

Application Period: Applications will be accepted on-line starting approximately October 15. Applications will be accepted on-line until February 15th.
Application Deadline

On-line applications should be completed as soon as possible and by February 15th at the latest. Supporting documentation, including GMAT and or TOEFL should be submitted as soon as possible after the application is made.

Early application is strongly recommended.

Applications made after February 15th will be considered if there is space in the program.
