Leadership Course of Part-Time MBA University of British Columbia

Sauder School of Business > University of British Columbia

BAHR 505 Leadership

Prerequisite
MBA Core

In this course we examine what effective leadership means and how it can be practiced. We will find, if we did not know it already, that leadership does not reside in one single individual but can be found in the actions of many different people in organizations. As present and future leaders you need to know about effective leadership and it makes sense to do so by exploring and assessing your own strengths, weaknesses, hopes and aspirations as leaders. This course is designed to address both these levels: learning about leadership and learning about oneself as a leader.

Multinational Enterprises Course of Part-Time MBA University of British Columbia

Sauder School of Business > University of British Columbia

BASM 531 Multinational Enterprises

Prerequisites
MBA Core

This module focuses on the decision-making process of multinational enterprises (MNEs). After a review of the facts surrounding “globalization” and the reasons for the existence of MNEs, we will look at the value chain of MNEs and develop a framework for deciding what to produce and sell in which location around the world. In entering a new foreign market, the key decision is to select the most appropriate entry mode: exporting, licensing, joint venture, acquisition, or greenfield expansion? We further explore models of MNE strategy, after which we turn to the relationship of MNEs to their partners, their rivals, and governments in the host countries. Further elements of our analysis concern international taxation, human resource management, pricing and communication strategies, and ethical conduct (such as dealing with corruption and responding to environmental standards). This course involves a role play illustrating the current environment of inter-governmental competition to attract foreign investors.

This course was called BAIM 501 prior to September 2008.
Please note that MBA Modules with BAIM codes have been re-coded to ensure that the disignation corresponds to the appropriate discapline.
Credit will not be granted for both BAIM 501 and BASM 531.

Two-Party Negotiations Course of Part-Time MBA University of British Columbia

Sauder School of Business > University of British Columbia

BAHR 507 - Two-Party Negotiations

Prerequisite
MBA Core

Managers negotiate everyday. They negotiate about contracts, leases, purchases, salaries and other material issues as well as about less tangible issues like expectations, ideas, and responsibilities. Managers need analytical skills to discover superior solutions to organizational challenges, but they need negotiation skills to get others to accept and implement these solutions. Unfortunately, many managers negotiate poorly. They compromise, give in, or force others to give in when creative problem solving could lead to a deal that would be better for everyone involved.

The goal of this course is to help managers become better negotiators. The course focuses on two-party negotiation. In it, you will learn how you and other people act in negotiations and how to avoid common mistakes. You will also have a chance to assess your negotiation style and develop an approach to negotiating that is consistent with your personality and values. This class is about learning by doing and so it uses a series of negotiation simulation exercises to help improve negotiation skills. You will act out roles that are assigned and distributed in class. After each exercise, the class will discuss all class members’ performances. The purpose of the discussion is to discover which negotiation approaches worked well and which didn’t. They will also give you a chance to reflect on your own approach to negotiations.
