This course offers an in-depth treatment of concepts involved in designing and implementing planning and control systems within the context of a dynamic environment. There will be a particular emphasis on the systematic use of information to maintain the efficient flow of materials, utilization of people and technology, coordination with suppliers, and communication with customers.

Supply Chain Management
This course focuses on the management and improvement of supply chain processes. Students will begin with the following supply chain basics: what are the important supply chain metrics; what are the primary cost tradeoffs; and what are the key features of the transportation industry? Students will next consider supply chain incentive conflicts and possible solutions to those conflicts. Several recent and influential innovations will then be discussed: Accurate Response, Continuous Product Replenishment, cross docking, Efficient Consumer Response, Postponement, Quick Response, Rapid Delivery, and Vendor Managed Inventories. Students will investigate supplier management and the outsourcing decision, and also touch upon International supply chains. The course will conclude with a broad discussion of the impact of electronic commerce on supply chains.

Service Operations Management
This course is designed to provide students with the techniques needed to design and analyze service delivery processes, particularly those associated with information-intensive services. The course will address the following topics: service operations in e-commerce, service blueprinting for process improvement, service supply chain and logistics services, service quality/experience, revenue management, globalization of professional services, waiting line analysis, call center operations, and data envelopment analysis. A recurring theme will be the use of technology in providing a faster and more reliable service delivery.

In order to understand and improve operations, one must acquire the necessary skills for tackling appropriate strategic problems. This course will not only equip students with several tactical tools, it will also clarify the strategic problems faced in operations today. This course looks at Total Quality Management from a strategic level. The course includes an overview of the Baldrige framework, a one-day team analysis of a Baldrige application written for training purposes, Cost of Quality Concepts, managing supplier quality, developing performance measurement systems, and the payoff from TQM. The course also includes speakers from organizations that have won the Baldrige Award and field trips to companies.

This core course focuses on understanding levers for structuring, managing, and improving a firm’s recurring business processes to achieve a competitive advantage in customer responsiveness, price, quality, and variety of products and services.
